So What is Going to Differentiate Your Custodial Team?

In an economy like we have seen the last two years, your company should constantly be looking for any competitive advantage it has to set it apart from the rest of the industry. Have you considered getting your company certified? There are 3rd party certifications for most industries that are attainable and beneficial to any company who pursues them. Most certifications are based on increasing efficiencies, saving money, quality management practices, or just increasing quality of products or services. Any company, like a political candidate, can make claims about the quality of a product or service, or a competitive edge they may have. However, if you are independently certified, you give customers assurance that you have made a commitment to quality and it has been verified by someone else.

There are also internal benefits to having a certification. For example, if you are in the cleaning industry and your cleaning department in an organization has a CIMS (Cleaning Industry Management Standard) certification, there is an incentive for your company to keep you around, because they know your department is doing a quality job for what they are paying you. This is particularly important in an economic environment like the one we live in now. Many companies are looking at the easiest ways to cut back budgets, and many times that includes outsourcing. Pursue a certification for job security.

The ISSA (International Sanitary Supply Association) which certifies organizations with the CIMS has recently added a Green Building (CIMS-GB) designation to their certification. Typically, there are five main categories which contain certain criteria to meet in order to be CIMS certified: Quality Systems; Service Delivery; Human Resources; Health, Safety and Environmental Stewardship; and Management Commitment. The Green Building category is the sixth category which is an option for those who wish to pursue the Green Building Designation.

CIMS-GB is designed to meet the needs of the Unites States Green Building Council’s (USGBC) Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification for Existing Buildings: Operation and Maintenance (EBOM). If an organization in the cleaning industry is CIMS-GB certified, they can be contracted from any organization pursuing the LEED-EBOM certification and will help that organization obtain their required points for the Green Cleaning category.

Green Seal also offers a certification to meet the needs of LEED-EBOM applicants. The GS-42 certification is based on this standard and focuses on cleaning for health and the environment. The categories covered in this standard are planning, products, supplies, equipment, procedures, training, communications and labeling. While ISSA and the CIMS program may be better known in the cleaning industry, Green Seal is a certification that is more widely known and trusted for a wide array of product and service certifications.

LEED-EBOM 2012 is Around the Corner

As the momentum on Green Cleaning continues to accelerate, we have an important request for feedback as the The Ashkin Group and the Green Cleaning Network, LLC have been selected to work with the U.S. Green Building Council as it prepares its next revision (version 3), of LEED-EBOM (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance). Based on our experience working on the LEED-EB Core Committee, we have been asked to gather and summarize comments from the cleaning industry and present them to the LEED Technical Advisory Groups (TAG) for consideration as they revise the prerequisites and credits for the 2012 Rating Systems. I realize that 2012 sounds far into the future, but it really is not. Although the new standards will not be released for two years, the preparatory work, including feedback and comments from the industry, is needed in less than two months, by January 30, 2010. So please visit the following site and comment now www.ashkinleedeb.com. This is the chance to have your voice heard!
