Carbon Footprint – What is It and Why Should You Care?

Over the past several years, Global Warming has become one of the most discussed and debated topics in politics and in some cases, business. Global Warming, also known as Global Climate Change, is an increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s atmosphere which is likely to shift weather patterns across the globe. Although Earth’s climate does change naturally every several thousand years, humans have accelerated this shift by emitting billions of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

A greenhouse gas is a substance that absorbs heat. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Methane (CH4) are the most commonly known greenhouse gases, but there are many more. Normally each night, the residual heat from the sun’s rays escapes from the Earth into space. However, with an increase in greenhouse gases, the heat is trapped in the Earth’s atmosphere and cannot escape as easily to cool our planet. This is what causes global warming. Although Methane is up to 21 times more potent a greenhouse gas than Carbon Dioxide, CO2 plays a huge role in climate change. This is why you may hear more discussion on trying to reduce our “carbon footprint”.

There are several websites and organizations which specialize in calculating carbon footprints. If you have access to some basic information in your company related to travel, freight, and energy costs, you can calculate your carbon footprint. Some are more detailed than others and require a company to pay for an audit to properly calculate the impact they are having. Many of these companies then offer carbon offsets (usually in the form of Renewable Energy Certificates) to fund clean energy projects around the world.

The prices for offsetting your carbon footprint vary greatly between the many organizations that offer such services. The least expensive seemed to be Verus Carbon Neutral (http://www.verus-co2.com/index.php) at approximately $2.75/ metric ton of carbon. The most expensive was PlanetAir based in Canada at $40/ metric ton (http://planetair.ca/index.php?sel_lang=english). Most web sites offer individual and business calculations and offsets. For more information on how to calculate your carbon footprint and strategies to reduce or eliminate your impact on Global Climate Change, check out these websites: http://www.carbonfund.org/site/, http://www.terrapass.com/.

Kimberly-Clark Professional is excited to announce that we have received Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) chain-of-custody certification for a broad range of towel and tissue products.

They are the first away-from-home tissue products provider in North America to receive this distinction! This certification applies to a variety of their distinctive KLEENEX® and SCOTT® brand paper towel, bath tissue, and facial tissue products. The FSC-certified products will feature the FSC label on the packaging beginning in late September 2009. There will be no change to the quality, performance, or product codes on the products receiving the FSC label.

What is FSC?

The FSC Label on their products certifies that the wood fiber used to make the products comes from well-managed FSC-certified forests or from post-consumer waste. FSC chain-of-custody procedures provide a link between the forest where the fiber originated and the product into which it is manufactured.

Who is FSC?

FSC is an international, independent organization dedicated to promoting responsible management of the world’s forests. It was founded in response to public concern about deforestation and demand for a trustworthy wood-labeling system. FSC is also the only forest certification organization endorsed by such major environmental groups as the Greenpeace, the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), The Nature Conservancy, and the National Wildlife Federation.

More details on specific products will follow in our next newsletter.

POLYSYRENE RECYCLING:

Here is a recycling resource for those of you in the Muskegon/Grand Haven area. For those of you having some issues finding a way to recycle polystyrene (or Styrofoam) packaging or peanuts there is a company in Muskegon that will take that off of your hands. They recycle it to make other packaging materials and also use it to make insulation for foundations for homes. They will not take food containers, but many of us are at a loss on what to do with all the packaging materials when we purchase new computers/electronics or other items. They are open during normal business hours and there is a bin to place that hard-to-recycle commodity.
