Prepare for the Flu Season

Each year between 35 million and 50 million Americans come down with influenza and other infectious diseases.  Workers miss days on the job and students miss teaching hours and sometimes worse, lives can be lost.  Create a Stay Well environment in your facility this season.  Here are a few things you can do:

Encourage occupants to wash hands regularly

A good guideline for washing hands is after using the restroom and after touching a lot of surfaces that a lot of other people have touched. Hand washing before eating prevents germs from getting from hands into the body.  Encourage use of soaps and no rinse hand sanitizers.  Be sure these resources are available to all occupants especially in areas where water is not easily accessible, ie:  fitness areas, multipurpose and gathering rooms, office spaces etc.

Know the difference between sanitizing and disinfecting Sanitizing lowers the number of germs while disinfecting kills germs. Many cleaners can do both, but they have different instructions. Disinfecting usually requires the solution to sit for a longer period of time before washing it away. Refer to CDC Guidelines to be sure the product is designed for the job you intend to do. Clean surfaces that get touched often As far as viruses go, the flu virus is somewhat fragile. Cleaning surfaces that get touched often like doorknobs, counters/tabletops, keyboards, light switches, elevator buttons will help keep the virus from spreading from surface to person. Keep up with routine cleaning Again because the flu virus or infections are relatively fragile, routine cleaning of bathrooms, classrooms, workspaces, kitchens, and other areas that have high traffic and that should be cleaned regularly will help prevent the spread of the viruses and infections.
