It’s Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day!

No matter how old you are, no one can resist popping Bubble Wrap! The last Monday of January is always dedicated to celebrating bubble wrap with Bubble Wrap Appreciation Day.

The first “Bubble Wrap” was formed by sealing two shower curtains together in 1957. Before Bubble Wrap found its true calling as packaging filler:

  • Bubble Wrap was originally designed to be used as wallpaper (can you image the kind of self-control it would take not to pop all your wallpaper?!…Probably why it didn’t catch on as home decor)
  • Bubble Wrap was also marketed unsuccessfully as green house insulation

Bubble Wrap finally found its true purpose a year later when inventors Marc Chavannes and Al Fielding sold it to IBM which used it as protective packaging material for the IBM 1401 to its customers. Sealed Air® branded Bubble Wrap in 1960, since then, Bubble Wrap as taken off as one of the most popular (and fun) packaging materials in use.

Before we “wrap up” here, our friends at Sealed Air® also continues to expand the fun with Bubble Wrap through their new line, Bubble Wrap® IB Expressions. This packaging features the air pockets in shapes such as “smiley faces,” “hearts,” and “holiday wishes.” To celebrate Bubble Wrap Appreciation day, Sealed Air® is holding a voting competition for the next shape of Bubble Wrap® IB Expressions.
